Case

Guildford Cathedral

Graeme advised Guildford Cathedral & Vivid Housing between 2022 and 2024 on a very controversial application (and then appeal) for the demolition of 7 Cathedral Close dwellings and erection of 124 homes on land adjacent to the Grade II* Cathedral. In addition to market housing, 46% affordable housing (including 13 “tied” dwellings for Cathedral staff), the scheme sough to establish an Endowment Fund for the repair and maintenance of Cathedral. Main matters at Appeal (March 2024, 9 days) included complex Urban Design, Landscape and Heritage issues. A third party raised further matters on: the existence of an alleged war memorial; the purposes for which the land had been purchased in the 1930s; drainage; and highways.

Appeal dismissed in May 2024.
