Lord Carnwath “Law and the Environment: A Judge Looks Back” 27 March 2025

Lord Carnwath

Lord Carnwath gave a lecture at the LSE yesterday evening (Thursday 27 March 2025) to celebrate his 80th birthday and distinguished legal career and looked at developments in environmental law during his time in the law. The event was hosted by the LSE’s Global School of Sustainability, the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, and the LSE Law School and was attended in person and online by family, friends, colleagues and members of the judiciary, Landmark Chambers, members of the Bar, students and academics.

As Joshua Rozenberg has blogged Lord Carnwath (who said he was instructed to be optimistic) ended by quoting Sir David Attenborough’s speech to the UN in 2021 (https://press.un.org/en/2021/s...) and saying

“As I was cutting my 80th birthday cake last week, I was told that I had to make a wish. That was easy: my birthday wish was that the whole world, including the USA, will come back to recognise the truth of Sir David’s statement and the desperate need to act on it urgently.

In spite of everything, I remain optimistic that my birthday wish will come true.”

Also present were Justice Brian Preston the Chief Judge of the Land and Environment Court in New South Wales, who spoke on the topic of Lord Carnwath’s judgments, Joana Setzer an Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the Grantham Research Institute and Professor David Kershaw, Dean of the LSE Law School.

See Joshua Rozenberg’s article here.

A recording of this lecture will be available from next week.
